I have a bachelorās in Music Education and a masterās in Jazz Studies. My original goal was to become a music teacher, either at the secondary or university level. After grad school, I worked as an adjunct professor for a year. It was fulfilling and aligned with my goals, but it didnāt pay the bills. Now I work as an Administrative Assistant in the College of Fine Arts Deanās Office at a large university. The pay isnāt amazing (around $50k), but itās a good change of pace, a solid resume builder, and comes with excellent tuition reduction benefits.
That said, Iām feeling pretty burnt out on music and teaching right now. Iām considering using the tuition benefits to get a second bachelorās in something more practical. But Iām also wondering if this admin role could be a solid jumping-off point for higher-paying positions. Maybe even outside of higher ed. Iām not opposed to staying in administrative roles.
So my main question is: is there real potential for growth and better pay on the admin path Iām currently on? Or would it be smarter to use the tuition benefits now and get a more practical second degree?
