Iām 23F, majored in communications, and have been trying to break into public relations since graduating. Right now I work as an admin assistant at a university in a low cost-of-living area. I make $34k, live with roommates ($600 rent), and work a part-time job on the side. Thereās no growth in my current role, but Iām hoping I can eventually switch departments and move into comms. For now, I help the marketing office a little, but not in a meaningful way. The job is super chill with a 5-minute commute and 9:15 to 4:30 hours, and I donāt hate where I live.
Now Iāve got an offer for a $45k job in public relations in higher ed, which is exactly the field I want. But itās in my hometown, which has a very high cost of living, and Iād have to move back in with my mom because I couldnāt afford rent on that salary. The commute would be around 1 hour and 15 minutes during rush hour. Iād save money, gain real experience, and finally quit my part-time job, but itās more money on paper, not in reality. I canāt tell if Iām overthinking this, since my current job leads nowhere. I do have an interview coming up at my current university, but thatās not guaranteed. What would you do?

What would a $300/hr career coach say? š§ Hereās the cheese:
Take the job that gives you real experience in your field.
Itās in PR, in higher ed, and actually uses your degree. Thatās more valuable than any short-term tradeoff.
One year of real experience will unlock stronger jobs and eliminate the āno experienceā wall youāre hitting.
You wonāt get that by staying in admin hoping someone notices.

š Youāre only getting part of the snack.
